Everyone knows this chapter, so instead of a whole rundown, here’s a translation detail that often has me thinking of butterflies and hurricanes.

Hapgood has a reputation for being clunky, which is somewhat deserved. Although, without evidence, I wonder if some of Combeferre (and Enjolras’s) popular mischaracterizations could come from the Wilbour/FMA translation of "complétait et rectifiait" as “completed and corrected”.

Not to say that it’s a mistranslation. I think it’s a perfectly good translation of that line, and much better sounding besides. However, I do think that “corrected” has a slightly different connotation than “rectified”, perhaps because to correct carries the implication that something must be incorrect. But I don’t really believe that’s how Combeferre, or Hugo, is thinking of Enjolras. Merriam-Webster sums it up nicely:

Additionally, “rectify” has the meaning, in chemistry, of refining or “purifying”. Which sounds VERY Combeferre!

So could this possibly be where we got those “Enjolras is wrongheaded” or “Combeferre is actually the logical, correct one” takes? Who knows! Maybe not. It’s honestly probably a lot of things. But yes, we still have to admit that “completed and corrected” sounds much nicer. Sorry Hapgood.

Of course, translation nitpicking aside, it’s also just a rather un-heterosexual sounding line.
